Why a CCTV System
Not only has CCTV been shown to be the most cost effective way of reducing stock losses and theft, it is increasingly used as a management information tool for the purposes of health and safety, monitoring workplace practices, and studying customer interactions with your business.
Components of a CCTV System are:
Digital Video Recorders – DVRs, NVRs & Servers
Digital Video Recorders (DVR), Network Video Recorders (NVR) or Security Servers form the heart of all digital video surveillance system. They provide the hardware and software to view live, record or review video footage. They also provide the technology and smarts that allows users to review days and months of recorded video quickly and efficiently allowing users to copy and downloading evidence and points of interest. More recently Video Management Systems (VMS) being software based solutions have been released into the market to manage multiple cameras on a network. These run on the Security Server and can utilise the existing network you have installed.
Wide range of options: With the boom of the CCTV industry over the last eight years, there are now literately hundreds of different models and brands of DVR, NVRs and cameras to choose from. To further complicate matters they use a wide range of different compression and storage technologies - some better suited to certain retail and commercial environments than others. There is also the question of whether to move into an IP environment or remain with the traditional analogue environment.
Time consuming and confusing: Trying to objectively compare and evaluate the different options can be both time consuming and confusing. Information offered in the sales pitch does not always relate or guarantee the performance of the system in the field.
Support and future proofing: One must also take into account the manufacturers and integrators support – is this technology going to be around and supported in 2-3 years times. Is it capable of growing with the needs of the organisation, is the technology sufficiently future proof to provide us with new developments as the technology improves?
